To the museum

How’s everyone doing? As you can probably imagine, drawing the museum building took a while, I hope it at least looks decent. This museum (well, actually the whole city) is based on an actual place. Google Maps is so handy hahaha~

We’ve had a bunch of people cancel their Patreon pledges (New Year’s resolutions?) so I’d appreciate it if you considered pledging! You can get a personal avatar drawn by me, read two pages ahead, read the whole archive of the mini-comic that I post in the vote incentives… I’m not sure if it’s worth the money but it sure makes me happy. No pressure, though! If you can’t or don’t want to support on Patreon, I’ll happily take the TWC votes and Twitter likes! Thanks! πŸ™‚

What’s going on at my end… You might have heard that Japan is putting in more restrictions since we recently doubled the number of daily covid cases. I haven’t seen any of those restrictions yet, however, so it might be that not much will change and we’ll soon have 5k new cases every day instead of 2k. I’m honestly already too tired to worry about it. We don’t use trains, don’t go to restaurants, don’t visit friends, nothing – total isolation. We used to go hiking but I haven’t been in the mountains for months since I’d need to use trains. I’m trying to stay active by doing super long walks – we had a 30km one this last weekend haha, it was nice.

I’m working hard on editing my novel–fixing little mishaps and polishing the prose. I hope to be completely done with it by the end of February and start querying agents. If that doesn’t work out (which I suspect it won’t) I’ll work on self-publishing it in the second part of the year. But you know, keep your fingers crossed just in case haha. I have another draft to polish this year and plan to write another story but I’m getting more and more intimidated by my own ambitious plans. My eyes are protesting.

Historia is moving forward as well and I’m trudging through the remaining assets. I spent last week drawing character sprites with dozens of different expressions haha… Look forward to it! I’m much happier with the art this time around so I hope you’ll love it once it comes out in May πŸ™‚

I can also share what I’ve read/listened to recently? Some of those are popular science books, some are fantasy. Maybe some of you are looking for something new:

  • Why we sleep — it was actually very informative and I changed some of my habits thanks to this book. I keep recommending it to all of my friends.
  • This is your brain on music — the first half was hard to sit through, honestly… The second had some interesting tidbits but even though the material is interesting, I felt it wasn’t presented in the best possible way. Maybe his other books are better? The topic is very interesting, though.
  • Essentialism — essentially a waste of time. I don’t like being this harsh when it comes to books, but you’d think that, given the principle this work is advertising, it would be concise and to the point. It was nothing but.
  • Beyond Redemption — dark fantasy, I didn’t like it (it bored me, had plot holes and it was gross for the sake of being gross) but to each their own, some people absolutely love it. The prose and worldbuilding are excellent but weren’t enough for me to enjoy it.
  • The city of stairs — reading this now. I’m in 30% and so far so good!

Pity they couldn’t find a ‘world’s greatest wall of razorwire’ or such in there. Any keen zombie apocalypse people would have likely looted anything smaller.

Apparently, you still have rather small audience. You mentioned the city is real already on December 14, 2020 and so far noone found what city that is. If Randall Munroe did this, I think someone would found it in day.

I’m well aware of exactly how small Replay’s audience is lol And I like Randall’s comic more than Replay too, so I suppose it’s understandable!

I never thought about actually finding the city, but you made me curious.

It took a lot of Google-fu and cross-referencing of images from the things we’ve seen lately (all in all I think it took a good 2 hours). To make things harder, the map we see in comic #56 is turned upside-down. I’m 99.9% sure I found the location, and in the end it was the museum which was the big giveaway (I thought it looked european – hah!).

If you realized the map is upside down you most likely got it! πŸ˜€ The location of the museum is a bit different too (I needed to move it haha). Nice!

I looked around the City in Google Maps some more afterwards – now I’m 100% sure, as I also found the square to the west (well, east for them I presume). You’ve really captured the locations well – the buildings around the square, and also the bridge in #57 (and what I think is a university building)! πŸ™‚

Really tricky to find the country, as I was all over the world at the start of the search.

Thank you for the always so exciting mondays! Can’t wait for the next one! πŸ™‚

Now I greatly desire a talent of “Google-fu”. So far it has been Google-poo – but, I shall endeavor. The fact that I have been endeavoring now for weeks should give you a rough idea of my own progress. If you ever see an Ogre is man standing in the middle of an intersection holding a map upside down, please give him a nudge…

Haha I’m glad I provided some entertainment! Really impressive that you managed to find it all! πŸ˜€

I’m really enjoying your story, found and got caught up over Christmas break.

This isn’t a recent book, so I don’t know how available it will be, but “Reality Dysfunction” is the first of three books by Peter Hamilton might strike your fancy. It went a bit to dark and depressing for me to get through. I think I made it part way into the second book. I’ve read other sci-fi books by him, but their names haven’t left the lasting impression this book had.

Oh, nice! Thank you! I’ll add it to my list πŸ˜€
And I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying the story so far! Thanks for reading! πŸ™‚

Run and don’t look back too much,
lest you get caught by their cruel touch.
But don’t run far, you know the drill,
lest ‘nother demon has their fill.

But what is this, so sparkly clean,
the floor, the walls, what does this mean?
No blood, no grime, no hurt, no pain,
where are those, who once got slain?

    It’s a museum, empty shell,
    nobody’s haven, nobody’s hell.
    Deserted once, a shelter now,
a fearful look, a silent vow.

    Come, you monsters, death awaits!
Come one, come all, right through these gates!
And meet, at last, our magic blades,
thrust at you! Where are my shades?

Now they wait, the witch, her knight,
hold their swords with all their might.
And hope that they will live to tell,
what happened before this night fell.

Now what fun it would truly be,
    if these demons, counting three,
did not mean their death at all,
but merely mean to protect this hall.

Maybe their snarls and growls just mean,
‘Oh come on guys, keep our place clean!’
‘We worked real hard to preserve this place.
No wait! Watch out! No, don’t throw that vase!’

Having a little too much fun here. πŸ˜›

I’d like to add that you get some discord benefits too if you join, and maybe even postcards again next year πŸ˜‰

Sorry that I couldn’t keep up with paying the higher tier though.

    • NotImportant Reply

Oh please don’t worry about it! I definitely don’t want people to feel guilty, I just figured it might be a good occasion to mention Patreon. And yeah, there’s a special Discord channel and there were postcards last year! I still have a ton of them xD
