Important memory 2

Oh Sofia, what have you done… Can you guys guess what will happen next? ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

In case you crossed your fingers for me and are curious – my exam went well, I passed with an A and will get a nice, shiny diploma after I get back from Japan! Yay me, after two years of juggling two jobs and master thesis I finally got rid of the last one, hah. Now I’ve got less than a week to pack and get everything ready for the trip. It feels so weird, I didn’t have the time to wait for this journey.

From other news: I’ve been working on the prologue over the weekend, fixing repetitions, adjusting the dialogues a little… The new version is not posted yet and I expect to change only minor details, but if you planned to re-read the whole thing it would be better to wait a little longer~ And I’m almost done with a new illustration/print, somehow with Sofia again haha, the little bugger refuses to leave my mind.

I need to get some books for the trip, for last two years everything I’ve read (well, almost) had equations, I want some food for the imagination. My buddy recommended Sanderson’s works to me, any of you read his books? Do you have a favourite? Because I only get ‘they are all awesome’ from the mentioned Sanderson’s true fanboy.

There’s plenty of other things she could have asked, the first three panels started a mental chain reaction of dirty jokes

Sofia, why did you break poor Robert? You have to be nice to cute guys, not try to break them!

My guess is either a vision thing, or a really embarrassing memory. Because flashbacks are usually not for comedic affect, I’ll guess the former, but I could see Ada (if she was there at the time) asking him something just to mess with him, and him remembering that.
Also, Sofia (and Ada in the vote incentive) are making cute faces. I hope Ada’s is because she heard him saying that her underwear was on top.

As for book recommendations without equations, I strongly recommend Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics. I’m working on it now, and there are zero equations in it. I promise.

She takes pleasure in breaking guys she likes. She is that kind of girl ʘ‿ʘ

Thanks for the recommendation! I have already read Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics but the plot and characters were so enchanting, that I might as well give it another go (‘∀’●)♡

Sounds like my kind of woman ~ω°
As for my guess at what comes next: RPG-style random encounter is the first thing that comes to mind. But that would be ridiculous.

        Right?

The first question at the first interview for my first job was: “Why do you want a job with us?” I answered a very honest “Because I want to make money while working with my hobby.” Worked that job until I left for college, had fun doing it, and made a decent bit on the side.

Mine was “How are you feeling” and my reply was “Terrified, but I think that’s natural at this point” which seemed to set the tone quite well. Still here 10 years later.

If you’re asking about Brandon Sanderson, I recommend “The Way of Kings”.

    To quote:
“I finished the first draft of The Way of Kings in 2003, but I started working on pieces of the book back in the late ’90s. Threads of this novel go back even further in my brain. No book of mine has spent longer simmering; I’ve spent more than a decade building this novel.”

I do believe the universe of The Way of Kings is his opus magnum. Or at least that’s how I interpret the above.

It’s not finished, right? But from what I know, Sanderson has more than one unfinished series, might be hard to actually find something complete. Thanks for the recommendation, it sure sounds delicious.

Hmm…I’ll be honest, I didn’t get the impression that Sofia was interested in Robert or thought him cute from the last page.
She seemed more bored at the entire incident than anything else.

I know she’s not exactly a giddy teenager any more (how old is she in this memory anyway?), but still, some sort of expression revealing ‘I’m interested in that guy’ would’ve been nice.
But then again, I’m probably not picking up on it, seeing how I’m terrible with expressions in general. 🙂

Besides, Sofia has nothing to blame herself for. She asked a rather innocent question.
She couldn’t have known that it would trigger a bad memory with Robert.

Of course she will still blame herself, but there’s nothing we can do about that from here, is there?

Do you think bringing up an online petition to change the coming page would have any effect? 😛

On another note, I already said it before, but I’ll happily say it again: Congratulations on getting your master thesis done. 😀
I hope you’ll have a lot of fun in Japan. 🙂

If girls showed their interest openly the world would be easier to live in hahaha~ She looks super bored precisely because she is interested! That’s how girls work! At least some of them, Sofia included. And yes, not being at fault doesn’t make her stop blaming herself for the incident ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Next page is already drawn so no, too late for petitions haha!

And thanks! I also hope the trip will be awesome. Right now I am crying over JPY prices going up (ノ`Д ́)ノ

Congratulaions on passing! (And without missing any updates, good job ;))

I’ve only read Mistborn series by Brandon, but I can highly recommend it. The first book is amazing, then it kinda derails into the third book (still found it a highly enjoyable read though).

Double thank you! “The narrative is crafted with such bloody precision, it’s nearly impossible to put the books down.” – that’s a quote from the Wikipedia about the book. Well, the flight takes 11 hours, sounds like a nice spot for the read.

    Congrats on earning your master’s!

As for books, I haven’t heard of Sanderson before, but if you’ll accept random book suggestions, here’s a few:
    * Dune (sci-fi, by Frank Herbert; classic)
    * The Twelve Kingdoms (fantasy, by Fuyumi Ono; best random buy I ever did)
    * Ender’s Game (sci-fi, by Orson Scott Card; classic, but author is apparently an awful person)
    * Jennifer Government (dystopian alternate reality, by Max Barry; one of the reasons I got into reading books after having avoided it for decades)
    * Soulless + rest of Parasol Protectorate series + spinoffs (steampunk/fantasy, by Gail Carriger)
    * The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (sci-fi/humor, by Douglas Adams; classic, and you’ve probably already read it)
    * The Black Magician trilogy + prequel + sequel (fantasy, by Trudi Canavan; keeps getting better as the series progresses and she stops overusing certain phrases)
    * Catch-22 (satirical, by Joseph Heller; classic)
And you already have some pop-sci recommendation from before. I suppose if you like to mix the two, you might like the Science of Discworld as well (by Terry Pratchett, Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen)

What sort of books do you like, anyway?

    • NotImportant Reply

From what you’ve listed I’ve read Scott Card’s books and loved them, also some from Pratchett but I don’t enjoy stories about idiots, his main characters annoyed me too much… Maybe it was just that one book, I don’t know.

What books do I read? Hm, those with creative ideas I guess? I like detailed and interesting worlds, drama and good fights. Last time I’ve read Hyperion – enjoyed that one a lot~

Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll look through those books after work.

      • JW Reply

Would you recommend the sequel to Ender’s game? Cause I’ve heard the rest of the series wasn’t nearly as good as the first, so I just never started on the rest.

Hmm, well, I really like how Terry Pratchett develops his ridiculous world (where the laws of nature are perhaps best described by tvtropes), and while there’s few characters I’d really call idiots, I can see why they might annoy (probably in the same way I feel about lots of comedy movies). They’re mostly not realistic characters.
In that case you might not like Catch-22 or the Hitchhiker’s Guide either (even though the latter is, like, Geek Heritage), cause there’s definitely a few ridiculous characters in both. I suppose it’s a bit of an inherent risk with humor.

NB you can read the first chapter of Jennifer Government online for free at https://maxbarry.com/jennifergovernment/preview.html

Thanks for the warning! It really depends on the character, but I enjoy witty dialogues plus when everything is absurd then I get bored quickly -either it’s quite easy to predict everything after a while or it’s just plain impossible and my brain gives up.
I’ve read Ender’s Game a looong time ago, but recommended it later to my friend and he enjoyed it immensely so it must still be a good read haha. I’ve read 4 first books, favorite one was the Speaker for the Dead. Delicious.

        Hyperion is aaaaawesome!
        You know what’s more awesome?

William Gibson’s Neuromancer and Sprawl Trilogy. That was so awesome.
Also, I recommend you Dune, too. And I have lots of sci-fi books to advise you.
Like Iain M Banks “the Culture” books. So awesome.

        • JW Reply

I liked the second Culture novel a lot. (The first not so much; I found it a bit depressing, with an unsatisfying end.) I still have the third waiting on my Big Pile of Book.

          • JW

Getting back to this, I found the third Culture novel unsatisfying as well.

Some great choices and authors in there. I’d add The Earthsea Quartet by Ursula Le Guin to that reading list!

I second the dune cycle, I’d look into “Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P. Lovecraft. Commemorative Edition” I doubt I could finish it in 20 hours.

I just discovered your comic, and I absolutely love it. I was equally impressed by all your other art. You are amazing, to be able to create so much, with so many things demanding your time.

Regarding Brandon Sanderson – the previous comment about “The Way of Kings” was spot on, absolutely brilliant. I’d also recommend the Mistborn series.

If you haven’t read it, I implore you to read “The Kingkiller Chronicles” by Patrick Rothfuss. It is also unfinished, but the first two books are absolutely phenomenal. Some of the most amazing world building I’ve read. Absolutely immersive, wonderful for long plane rides.

    Enjoy Japan! 🙂

  9. Marscaleb Reply

The first Sanderson book I read was Elantris and I absolutely loved it. It doesn’t seem to get as much attention as the Mistborn series though, which is a shame. Honestly I liked Elantris more than any individual Mistrborn novel, (but of course, you get a lot more adventure out of a trilogy than you do from a single stand-alone title.)

    • NotImportant Reply

I asked the fanboy I know about it and he gasped and then started explaining why he didn’t read it yet (I think he feels bad about it) hahah~ Thank you Marscaleb!
There are no complains about Sanderson, he must be really good.

      • Nighthawke Reply

Elantris was one of his best works, I would safely agree. But I also found Warbreaker to be in the same league. Whereas Elantris focused on the relationship between magic and its relationship with politics, nations, and social hierarchies, Warbreaker instead focused more on how magic affects a person’s senses, as well as the transferring of said magic from person to person (and the effects thereof).

I have also read the Mistborn trilogy, and I found the premise of the storyline to be the most intriguing: what if the hero set out to save the world, and they failed? The world of Mistborn is essentially told in the aftermath of that event, the details unravelling as the story progresses. Of course, once the characters sucked my into the story, I couldn’t put it down either. LOL.

Well, I would guess so.done thinks he just had a seizure, or that he has epilepsy. Either way, I actually know someone with epilepsy, and it’s not easy living wiht it from what she says. I mean, she’s pretty important in terms of knowledge, since she’s one of the top dogs I. The Epilepsy Society if Utah or whatever it’s called. I honestly can’t remember the name of it, but I do know she has so.e pretty good clout in the company.

Anyway, I’m sorry about the comment last week, NI. I was kind of frustrated with not knowing things from my books and comics, not to mention I have a lot of catching g up to do on games and I have a lot of books to read. Granted, this comic’s one page a week format is frustrating for me, but I guess I was getting g a little impatient with the waiting. Still, if the information is a spoiler then that’s fine to withhold from us. However, it seems like we get a LOT of “you’ll see” answers, and some of the information seems less important than you make it out to be, but if a demon’s anotomy is that important, then please let us know when they will show up. As for the rest of their anatomical information and various data points we haven’t covered (like some data collected on the demons Rob and ADA have killed), I was hoping for some kind of info page or site that would provide the essential but non story oriented information that WON’T be spoiled. Really, all I ask is that we get some kind of data book or site on the info the survivors we’ve met have collected, such as those photos of the demons, and other things such as forensic data on both the demons and the people killed would be helpful. I mean, it would add to the world, and that kind of info is rarely likely to spoil anything story-wise.

If this still doesn’t work, then I don’t know why to say about data we could use. If you don’t think the data is important there are people who would disagree with that. I for one, think that any data can be used to make an informed decision or story, even if the information is bad or not reliable. If other information is saying the opposite thing, then I think there’s research to be done. And in this case, the information is very specific and based only on this world, so any information we can get would help us, since all I know we have so far are a couple of magic circles, a character intro page, and a couple of corpses that have probably been examined by now and could have info that we can use, but aren’t spoilers. Still even if some of that information IS a spoiler, and then you say, “Oh, it turns out I can’t work that in,” then please, let us know about the information and add it to the database for future use. Still, a site is probably better for most of us right now, since while two thirds of the world has no internet, most of us who read this probably have regular access to it so a site will probably be more beneficial to us.

    • Dæmon Reply

Damn it autocorrect. That start should be, “Well, I would guess most of them think”.

And as for the other thing, basically, ” Sorry for the rude comment last comic. I was frustrated with my lack of knowledge. Is it all right if we get a data collection site or page, where we can look at the anatomical notes and other data that WON’T be spoilers?”

    • NotImportant Reply

You sure know how to turn 3 sentences into a novel hahaha. Don’t worry about your comments from last week, I didn’t get upset or anything. And sure, I’d love to add more to the world, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be making the spellbook for example. But since I didn’t have much time because I was finishing my studies everything had to be put on the side and I focused on the pages. I promised I’ll make Stefen’s notebook and I will, I hope to start it with the next chapter but I’m not sure how it’ll go. I’m not going to write world-info in the comments as many people would miss it and I’d need to repeat myself later on, that just doesn’t work.

Maybe Robert is actually a robot and just started getting a system update by WiFi unexpectedly.

I really want to know what happened now.
Also a great author to read is Jim Butcher. All his books are good but the dresden files are the best. Since there’s magic some plots get confusing but it always makes sense when you finish.
