Away from corpses

Moving to another location, where we will ponder about various things for a moment. A short breather continues. Unluckily for them the only facility open to civilians where you could take a shower was the one they lived in before the ventilation system broke down. So at this very moment it’s kind of hard to clean up. You and Robert can enjoy Ada’s bloody look for a moment longer~

I am still on Mallorca, enjoying the sea and Spanish air (I won’t say anything about the sun since it’s raining this very moment). I’ll be travelling back this weekend so you can expect next page a bit late or a bit early, haven’t decided yet. Exciting pages are coming, I am very curious what you’ll say about them..! ლ(╹◡╹ლ)

And last little thing: my sister, who is also reading Replay, has her birthday today! I hope she reads those descriptions as well….

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VICKY! ♪ ( ^ ●^)ノ┌iiii┐ヾ(^○ ^) ♪

The…the expressions most certainly are…different in this page. I guess that goes to show that the immediate threat is over and they get to relax a little and fool around in the process.

That said, I like that they’re unwinding so quickly. It is a very good display of ‘stress management strategy’.

‘We’re surrounded with bloody corpses all over the place, whatever normality we had just got crushed, so let’s just ignore it all happened and find us some shade.’

Sound stupid, but I can actually relate.
    Another very nice page.

And also ‘Happy birthday’ to Vicky from me. 🙂

Ah yes, as a little addendum: Shouldn’t it be ‘Away from the corpses’? (Sorry for double posting, but there’s still no ‘Edit’ button. :P)

    • NotImportant Reply

I am not sure I can add it easily so you will have to manage~! And since it’s a title and not a proper sentence I figured I could omit the ‘the’ without anyone complaining about but I should have known better haha ;D Glad you like the page! I didn’t want to make all characters sit in the corner and cry, they’ve been in this situation for a while now, it’s either being indifferent or being mad at this point.

      • Refugnic Reply

Oh, I wasn’t going on about the title (which I am fairly indifferent about). I was talking about Robert’s response, which coincidentally matches the title. 😉

And well, that’s what you get for having active writers in your audience! 😛
Not that my sentences are always accurate and perfect and stuff, I’m currently proofreading my latest book and let me tell you…the typos…all those typos, misconstructions or plain out weirdness…so yeah, I know the feeling all too well. 😉

Yup, exactly my thought. It’s kinda funny how you can break down most any decision to the binary level where it’s ‘only the one thing or the other’, isn’t it?
At this point it’s either ‘Deal with it’ or ‘Break from it’. It’s kinda obvious which one the better choice is…on the other hand however, the ‘better choice’ rarely is ‘the easier choice’.

          • Refugnic

Some do. Besides, he’s doing a great job at putting on a brave front. In the first panel I didn’t even know that he was hurt, so I just assumed that the sentences should be complete. However I’ve been going over it as an afterthought while driving to work today and came to realize that it might be a correct sentence after all.
He’s not trying to get away from the corpses laying around him, but away from corpses in general. As such, it makes sense. Sometimes one just needs to sleep over it to see their folly, eh? 😛

      • Gonnhirrin Reply

Don’t get too buried in the language, a lot it is quite complicated and frequently ignored so not every grammatical error, “typo”, or odd word choice is wrong for the character. I sometimes use mispellings or word choice to effect a tone of voice in personal notes and this is a personal aside for the characters.

        • Refugnic Reply

Yeah, I’m terrible with dialects in my stories. Maybe my characters would be more relate able if I wasn’t. 🙂
The biggest problem with dialects or ‘personal quirks’ is being consistent about it…all too often I simply forget about them.

          But that’s why I’m a hobby writer instead of a professional. 😀

You’re right though, many rules of a language don’t need to be obeyed for people to understand what you’re trying to say.

        • NotImportant Reply

I’ll keep your advice in mind, thank you~
And welcome too, since I think it’s the first time I see your comments 😉

    • Rateus Camp dweller Reply

I think it reads fine with or without the the. I prefer it without.
We would say lets find some shade rather than lets find some shadow though, that did stick out as slightly dodgy English (because our language is stupidly complicated).

I really like the bottom scene, that looks pretty and tranquil which is remarkable so near a battlefield.

Happy birthday Vicki. It is my birthday today as well 🙂

      • Refugnic Reply

Happy birthday to you too then. And you say that English is stupidly complicated? Pray tell, how many languages to you speak? Because, as a matter of fact, any language has its ‘stupidly complicated rules’ that makes them terrible. 😀

A little example that keeps me staggering:
In German, if a dialog is followed by an action you need to put a comma, in English this comma must not appear. English makes more sense in that regard if you ask me.
What makes NO sense whatsoever in this regard, and this both English and German have in common, is that the period gets replaced by a freaking comma and I have no idea why. Language is odd like that I guess.

But getting back to ‘stupidly complicated’…now, I don’t speak Chinese, however I find it rather…complicated to have to memorize some 4000 characters in order to be able to read the newspaper. If you require a Thesaurus to read a book written in a language, the language may have a bit of a complexity problem…

Long speech cut short: I think English is one of the most simple languages in the entire world, in terms of character set, wording and grammar. Of course, if you want to do it ‘right’, you’re still in for quite a ride, however you’re in for the same ride in ‘Worse’ in most any other language.

The last panel…well, it would, but their expressions kinda ‘ruin’ the sense of tranquility for me.
Don’t get me wrong, it is fitting after what they just went through. If they had gone in there laughing gleefully simply enjoying life I would’ve wondered if they had finally gone completely bonkers. 😀
        At least that’s what I think. 😛

        • Rateus Camp dweller Reply

I guess by complicated I meant the subtleties of it with similar overlapping words (and homonyms), rather than the number of characters. I speak 1 language, though I have studied German, French and Spanish. I find learning languages really difficult 🙁

          • Refugnic

Heh…yeah, the context words tend to be difficult, however that’s the same in any language I believe. The character set is an additional challenge when learning a language though.

Learning languages…well, it is no easy feat, though I had a fairly easy time learning English, simply because there are many similarities between German and English. One could say that English is the ‘simpler brother’ of German, though I may be biased in this regard. 😉

      • NotImportant Reply

Thanks! I will change shadow for shade then, I had no idea it makes such difference. And as Refugnic said – all living languages have quirks like that. There’s probably still a long way before I learn how to write properly (if I ever do)!

Bloody look… well, our skin is “auto-cleaning”, mostly… When you live in a place where you don’t have an easy access to water, you discover that stains and dirt on the skin tend to disappear rather quickly. Clothes are an other story, of course… (And anyway, you’re the boss, you know better how your characters should look ;-))

    • NotImportant Reply

You are correct! I made it a bit darker and then a bit faded (compared to the previous pages), in attempt to show that it’s drying and falling off. So enjoy it while you can haha~

      • Refugnic Reply

Well, they still need a place to do their laundry. I don’t think they’ve got an entire wardrobe with them, do they.

But then again, most people are either fleeing or already dead at this point. Who’s going to complain about a little plundering on the side, am I right? ;P

          • Refugnic

A change of clothes maybe, however how many ‘changes’? Those clothes aren’t going to clean themselves and from the amount of gore they’ve had to deal with as of late, I can only imagine that they are going to need quite a lot of fresh clothes if laundry is not an option. 😉

I mean, their weapons are swords, it’s most certainly not going to get any less messy, is it? 😉

      • Refugnic Reply

Dang, one barely recognizes Robert inbetween these two pages. Goes to show how much your art evolved after all, even though it had been excellent to begin with.

That said, crashing into the tent right next to Ada as she woke up from her vision can’t have been good on his arm either. 😀

Wasn’t that even the same arm he fell on? Man, that’s gotta have hurt. 😀

        • NotImportant Reply

Luckily not, graze from the shot is on his left arm ;D But yeah, running around and killing demons surely didn’t make it heal quicker, that’s precisely why Ada is asking. We gotta hope he’s tough haha~

          • Refugnic

Heh, well I think he’s proven that he’s fairly tough. I mean the way he moved despite his injury and the way he dealt with the hits he took and everything…blame it on the adrenaline, but he really tanked it right there.

But then again, either cry like a baby about getting hurt (and get killed while complaining) or fight to protect yourself and those dear to you…well, if put in his position, I think I’d know which path I’d take too…well, try to take, I’m a bit of a wimp and probably would try to run away. 😀

          • NotImportant

Robert feels happy that you admire his toughness. He would probably feel happier if a certain redhead would give it a thought though.

And the problem with running away is: where to? They have considered leaving the camp as well, given how useless in their eyes military is right now, but they wouldn’t be able to get food, no shelter in the woods either, demons everywhere… You’ve got more chances among people, at least there is hope the demons will be busy eating someone else while you are running around the tents-maze ๏◡๏

My buddy is playing some weird game right now, something survival themed with dinosaurs… And there is a wise sentence on the loading screen: you don’t need to be faster than the dinos, only faster than your friends~

          • Refugnic

Hey, at least Ada expresses some concern about the injury in Robert’s direction. That’s gotta count something.
Besides, it’d be completely OOC for her to be all ‘Poor Robert, does it still hurt? Shall I kiss the spot to make the pain go away?’
Ada would probably kill herself before talking like that. 😀 (That, and it’d be plain hilarious XD)

True enough and I didn’t mean ‘run away’ as ‘get as far away from people as I can’, but much rather as ‘get away from the immediate threat to my life’…which basically evaluates to the little quote you shared.

I remember something like it: ‘It’s too fast! We can’t outrun it!’
‘Oh, we don’t need to outrun it.’
            ‘You have a plan?!’
‘Yup, I just need to run faster than you and get away while it’s busy eating.’

I…think the friendship might have ended right there. 😛

However you’re right, you’re better off with the military, not because they can protect you, but because they are trained to not let you starve or die of sickness and if you get hurt, chances are there’s a medic somewhere around. So yeah, all kinds of useful and if all else fails they at least make terrific decoys while you go and hide somewhere. 😛

Looks like Ada might not make it to the tree on her feet, but she can always lay down and start rolling.

        • JW Reply

Wait, you’re not suggesting he’s got one hand on Ada’s butt do you?
You can tell that’s not where he put it, because he’s not rolling on the ground in pain.

          • Refugnic

Well, those are trying times. And who knows, there might be things between those two nobody (important) bothered to tell us quite yet. 😉

Though I agree, from the information we have up to now, Robert would do well to keep his hands to himself…and not just away from Ada, if I understand that right. (Jealous Ada + Sharp Blade = Ouch :P)

          • Zero

Well, who knows, this IS Ada after all. She knows how to get what she wants. Violent reactions are not always immediate.

          • Zero

Anymore I see artists that are afraid to show off their characters in all their glory. It’s nice to know that there are artist like yourself that keep going no matter what form of censorship they face.

          • NotImportant

Hah, I don’t see it like that… I just draw what I like. If world tries to force me to stop I’ll just keep those drawings to myself~

Ah I only asked if that’s the facebook page you mentioned. And thank you!

Wait, seriously, facebook is deleting art? Because of what, artistic nudity? Did they miss out on the renaissance or something?

Also, wow. That’s some pretty impressive realistic painting.

        • NotImportant Reply

Thanks! ;D And yet, apparently they don’t like female nipples. Male nipples are okay though. Some people in the community suggested censoring female nipples with male nipples, but… I’d feel like a liar, you know?

          • JW

Someone should make art art exhibition around that theme, all the female nipples replaced with male nipples. I half expect someone already must have, but otherwise it’s a surefire way to get attention and make a statement.

          • NotImportant

I am not that much of an artist but I agree it could be interesting lol

          • Refugnic

How peculiar that male nipples are okay, but female ones are not. In my opinion is just trying to cater to the ones who are yelling the loudest once again.

I mean okay, I’m not too big on artistic nude myself, but whoever forces anyone to look at those pictures? Though I guess a ‘word of warning’-option might be nice. You know, for the minors and the ever-so-pure-minded adults. Like the mature filter on dA for example. One click and you relieve the site of the moral implication of looking at it. After all, you wanted to see it. You said so by clicking on ‘Display anyway’.

And before I get shot down for endorsing censorship or something, I’m not endorsing it. I’m just trying to find ways to make everyone happy. Never worked yet, but I’m far from over with trying. 😛

Just deleting the hard work of artists is definitely the wrong way to go, much like burning books never was a good idea. There are a few books in existence with dangerous content, however instead of banishing them, how about teaching the people why these ideas are dangerous? That way, those who endorse those ideas might have a bit of a harder time luring their prey in with those very ideas the ‘civilized people’ tried to keep away from them.

So yeah, I was straying. Anyway, I think it’s best to not censor anything, although I will agree that at least some sort of commentary or education should accompany…particular resources.

            My apologies for ranting.

          • NotImportant

For reasons unknown to me Facebook decided to stick with “it’s for everyone” policy. Meaning there is no adult content. You have to be above 15 to have an account and they promise to protect you from all the boobs.
It doesn’t work too well, seeing how many porn-spam I see in some groups. I’d rather have a filter like you said.

          • JW

I don’t think artistic nudity should fall in the category of adult content. Anymore than illustrated biology textbooks on reproduction should. Or bathroom mirrors.

I suppose one might argue that there’s nothing wrong with tagging everything with labels, and letting people use them to filter their view of the internet (and world). I mean, there’s certainly things that I don’t want to see or hear. However, the resulting filter-bubbles can also have detrimental effects on society (group-think, polarization, intolerance).
Which isn’t to say that I think the world would suddenly be a better place if people got over the hangup that “female nipples are abhorrent to the public eye”, but it certainly wouldn’t be any worse for it either.

          • Refugnic

The big problem in this context, nipples aside, is that the female breast is considered a symbol of sexuality and many of the old morals build on the concept that we need to be protected from anything that is sexuality. I believe I once read that the female breast began to grow out as a result of the human evolving to the ‘Homo Erectus’ (the standing/walking human). All of a sudden, when walking behind a girl, the eyes weren’t on the level of the ass any more, so, in order to regain ‘attractivity’, the breasts began to grow as both a ‘visual replacement’ as well as a counterweight.

Anyway, to get back to the topic at hand, you’re right. It’s complete nonsense to censor the human biology. If people want to have sexual thoughts while looking at something, they will have sexual thoughts while looking at it, no matter how wrapped it is. In fact, from my experience, the naked skin is very quick to lose it’s appeal when seen often. You stop to see it as ‘the concealed object of desire’ and start to see it for what it is. Lumps of flesh meant to one day nurture infants.

I fussed about seeing naked skin as well when I was younger, but that was because I was taught to fuss about it. Even today there are things I do that are plain hilarious when you think about it, but I still do them because I am used to them.

Now, if every woman in the world would decide to walk topless in summer like many men do…I wonder if any person in the world would actually complain.
Well, I guess some men would, actually, because especially the breasts of the elder generation tend to be…less pleasant to look at. 😛

If people would stop being so biased and/or jealous (I don’t think men are the only ones who compare sizes. :P), ‘artistic nudity’ wouldn’t be a problem.
In fact, most of the world’s problems could be solved, if people would get the sticks out of their butts and start thinking what’s best for mankind as a whole instead of themselves or a small group/country…but good luck with that.

Okay, back on track, I personally have no longer a problem with nudity, be it artistic or not. Sure, I would be irritated if a woman walked topless on the streets, but not because I am offended, but just because I’m not used to it. For the same reason I am slightly irritated whenever I see people of different skin color on the street.
Not because I’m a racist. But merely because I am not used to seeing them around. 🙂

  7. takoyama Reply

first I like your comic and art and colors very good. now to comment on the subject of artistic nudity , im all for artistic nudity when its a female form, I find the female form beautiful. the male form not so much. the morals and standards are set by the society you live in for the most part and we live in a sexist society. female breasts aren’t thought of as tools for feeding children but objects that males are attracted to and want to interact with during sex. the male body isn’t thought of this way because men don’t think about other men’s chest for sex unless they are gay. the male genitalia is also thought of as a pure sex object in relation to its use with the female genitalia so it is thought of as sexually. female nipples aren’t thought of as abhorrent they are thought of as things for sex first and babies a distant second. replacing female nipples with male ones might make a picture look odd but not any less offensive because its the entirety of the breast not just the nipple that is sexualized, so even with a male nipple the rest of the breast is sexual

  8. Zero Reply

Still, there should be a point made that our society doesn’t need the social stigma of double standards.

    • Refugnic Reply

You are aware that our society is built on double standards, right? Sure, they say it’s not like that, but no matter where you look, ‘equal treatment’ is a very rare sight to come across.

        • Refugnic Reply

Most certainly, yes. But you know, one of the funniest things about mankind is: We hate ‘change’ so much that we’d rather put up with something completely wrong rather than change something about it. Because you know how it is…whenever something changes, it may well take a turn for the worse.

As long as everything stays the same, people are happy and content, because that’s what they’re used to. That’s what they know how to deal with. If things change however, they need to get accustomed to the new facts first. This takes time and effort, which are two things people don’t like to invest easily. Which is why they’d rather keep things the same they are now.

          • Zero

True, but it’s only in how we react to each change that we can grow. So essentially, change is something that will happen no matter what. The randomness of the universe is constant. People are the things in this universe that change.
