I hope everyone’s well! I have no idea where this week went, honestly. Going back to work after 2 weeks of break is tough.

I’m mostly focusing on Historia and my novel. Since I’m absolutely terrible at writing romance, I have rewritten a kiss scene (in the draft I’m working on right now) 5 times and ultimately decided not to do it at all lol Maybe, one day, I’ll write a good romance. As of now, it remains an afterthought in my stories. But hey, I’m trying.

I started reading Gideon the Ninth and I don’t like it! Happy to argue about all the inconsistencies in the world-building that drive me nuts. I can’t focus on the story because questions keep popping in my head, provoked both by the absurd setting, very teenage’y teenagers, and convoluted prose. Not my thing. But I’ll finish it nonetheless (because people apparently love it). Anything fun you’ve been reading recently? I also got recommended The Witch’s Heart today but haven’t touched it yet.

    Anything fun you’ve been reading recently?

    I’m reading “Thief’s magic” at the moment. I’ve liked all of Trudi Canavan’s books I’ve read, so far. I’m now 1/3rd in, and I’m enjoying this one as well.
    One of the characters is a woman that’s been turned into a book, which reads the minds of people that touch her, to gather magical knowledge and answer whatever question her keeper has. So I’m interested to see the direction that will go.

    However, I do have to gripe about Canavan’s insistence to rename ordinary things like tea and coffee. I suppose it’s to make it sounds more fantasy-like, but it’s just bothersome to me. (Though, it was way worse in her first books.)

      Hopefully the book-lady takes a turn for the worse and starts gathering knowledge by turning her keepers into additional pages.
      Yeah, I couldn’t help but think that, because I’ve been playing a lot of Library of Ruina lately. 😀

      I love Trudi Canavan’s books, she’s one of my favorite authors. I really like how steampunky half of Thives Magic is.

      I hadn’t gotten beyond part one of the book when I wrote this. But I have to say, I really dislike the way this book is structured. It’s like it’s two books that alternate every half dozen chapters. And one of those two books is a much less compelling read than the other.
      I’m almost at the end now (yes, I take that long to read a book), and the two stories have still not connected in any way.

    Filip is so cringey. But oh well, I guess his little arc needs to be resolved before he can turn back into a “virgin” so that he can get his wizard powers.

    I wonder what the comic relief part of the cast is doing besides trying and failing to sacrifice a chicken.

    I am rereading some Discworld because reading Terry Pratchett makes me feel better about the world and I need that right now.
    Filip really is not great at the whole reading peoples mood thin, is he?

      He really isn’t 😀 Pratchett does sound good, actually… Maybe I’ll pick up one of his books sometime soon.

    Yeah well, I figure that’s better than telling Filip, ‘Oh by the way, your ex tried to kill her because you dumped her so nonchalantly and took away her only anchor still connecting her to this world that way. Congratulations on that.’

    After all, Stefen can’t always be around to save people who are trying to kill themselves.
    Still wondering who the heck that guy really is, being able to sense magic, see ghosts and all that.
    Kinda makes me wonder, if he’s also a virgin. (Since that seems to be a prerequisite for most kinds of magical aptitude)

      That’s only for ritual magic, isn’t it?
      I kinda think it’s the opposite; that if you have any innate magical ability, you don’t need to “resort to” ritual magic and its “purity” requirements.

    I’m always reading several book at the same time, or alternatively. Last week I finished “the bullet journal method”, which I had already been trying for a while. Another attempt at getting more organized 😉 Before that I was reading Atomic Habits, and still working on it.
    When I was away cycling for a week, we were discussing books at one of the bed and breakfasts where I stayed and the discussion came to the Millenium trilogy by Stieg Larsson. Which reminded me I had only read the first book, so I kind of binged through the other two when I got home (which aren’t exactly small), and really enjoyed them. I assumed that I didn’t finish the books because the movies were released around the same time, but now I doubt if I watched the last movie.
    There’s also the book by George R. R. Martin which tells the backstory of Westeros that I’m still reading, and I reread some of Old Man’s War books.
    There’s at least half a dozen more I’m currently partially busy in, among them two books about sleep, and one more about habits I think 😀

      Hahaha I usually read 2 or 3 at the same time, because I read on Kindle or paper during meals and listen to audiobooks while I draw. So I totally understand!

    Gotta feel for both in this scenario. You can still care without romantically loving, but coming into this discussion not knowing the truth of what happened has made Filip’s approach unintentionally clumsy which must be really hard for Nina. Oof.
