Greeting’s Mr. Ravenstock

It has come to my departments attention that your organization is of some repute. I have received assurances of your success in obtaining items of some rarity, Particularly those of an arcane nature. Because of this I have decided to engage you to obtain a particular book. The discretion with which you handle this case is essential as the item in question is both pre-Columbian and, of some notoriety. For this, a payment of 40,000 will be available, along with expenses of course.

I am also aware of your fascination with the collection of Victorian church documentation in our possession. I have contacted records retention, and I am prepared to give you the originals in return for the item, in addition to the proposed monetary reward.

Again I must stress the personal involvement of this department and of myself in the proposed endeavor. Certain parties of questionable utility might not approve of the attempt. And others might be less than capable of handling it. As you know we have recently undergone a change in management. As they are newly exposed to their roles in our company the new members would not be well served to be left without an effective marketing unit.

A description of the object and its back ground is attached.

Dear miss Lanrey

I am very happy to be of service to you and your group. all the assitance I can provide is at your disposal. I am sure I will enjoy an lengthy examination of those records. My progress has been mild if swift considering.

the volume I question was believed to be lost in the Adriatic sea during a delivery of estate possessions from Milan to Istanbul. Some brief investigations pointed me to the location of the wreck. A short(though costly) investigation has revealed the interesting fact that the collection contain the book was never taken aboard or has already been recovered. Considering the placement of the wreck and the condition of the ship it is my belief that the former is more likely. I have currently boarded a train in Greece and am heading for Millan itself. I expect to arrive by the end of the day.

My expense report:

Item’s

cost

Rental of sea plane, 3 days 150
Rental of scuba equipment 3 days 45
Fuel, provisions, air tanks, duct tape, lift gear. 123
Train ticket to Milan (2nd class), cab fare to Athens. (large tip to avoid check point) 35
Bribes for conductor, flight regulator, and librarian 15
total 668

With continued sincerity

CEO owner

Miss Lanrey

As I write to you I have located the volume, I am presently enroot to Istanbul by plane. I expect To be in possession of the volume in less than a day I will arrange delivery immediately after. Please inform me of any preferences you may have to the above

On arrival in Milan I investigated the shipping company contracted for the delivery, After some brief negotiations with their secretary I was informed of my “puzza orribile pagana” (roughly translated “horrible pagan stench”) and told to leave. At roughly 2:30 am I made a point to return. And seeing the desk unoccupied I was able to obtain the records for that particular delivery. It appears that the books where withdrawn due to their weight and placed on a second ship some two months later, and the cargo was in large part abandoned as the company did not inform the owners of the change. I have now learned the particular warehouse that the item is currently housed In and have made inquiry’s. My expense report for the above will follow

items

cost

2 cans boot polish(face black) 5
New shoes(the old ones were destroyed by the window glass) 23
Hotel, food, bribes to doorman 30
total ℓ58

Hmm…interesting. I’m not going to go picking out the typos I’ve stumbled across (heaven knows how many are in my stories :P)
I was a little lost along the way however. I understand that there is neither a surname given for Ada, nor is it ever said, what the company she works for is called or where it is located. As such it’s perfectly legitimate that you place her in the Czech Republic and give her the surname Lanrey.
It is contrary to what I write (where I place the events largely in the United States, simply because I started that way :P), but absolutely no problem.

What got me lost is, that Ada would go looking for some ancient book in the first place. From what we have learned in the comic, she already had the notes about the symbols and stuff in high school. Where she got them, I don’t know, but the book she’s carrying around is her personal journal. (As indicated by ‘God…my handwriting is a mess’ or something a few dozen pages back).

Another thing that irks me a little is, that the Investigator has considered handing it over the clergy. A modern day investigator wouldn’t believe in any sort of ‘arcane power’ and even if he did he would either work for the clergy or against them, seeing how the church would be very interested to keep any sort of pagan record under lock and key or have it destroyed.

Finally, after this I’ll shut up about the story, I promise: Why would he start his letters with ‘CEO – Owner’ instead of ‘W. Ravenwing’?

Okay, I’m done. Thanks for sharing, it’s been interesting to read someone else’s take on the world of Replay, that’s for sure, even though…nah, I promised. 😛

I need to reply because two things you asked about make perfect sense to me and I feel puzzled that they aren’t so obvious to you.
Why would Ada look for book – it’s fairly obvious, and I think it was pointed in your discussion with JW some time ago, that books, those about magic as well, have been rewritten by many people. Those people made mistakes. So you need as original book as possible to find the truth. Plus there are various volumes, why would she stop at one? If she is serious about her interests she would seek as many as possible. So she surely has reasons.
And your concerns about the investigator – she surely picked someone fit for the job. Maybe we’d have to pose as a ‘mage’, at least show that he is knowledgeable, he might have to prove to some local shamans that he is worthy, who knows? If I wanted to get a rare magic book like this I’d ask someone who isn’t ignorant about the topic.

I copy-pasted everything as it was. Let me know what exactly needs fixing and where.

Same question though. Why would Ada be so interested in that particular book. I mean, I know she dabbles in witchcraft, however for her to shell out this kinda cash using company resources, the book must hold some great significance…in fact, this discussion reminds me a little of my own fanfic ‘Faust’. Did you happen to read it?

And: Oops…sorry, my mind made Ravenwing of it. No clue where that came from. 😛

Regarding the bone to pick…I’m sorry, but I don’t see it. I did read that Ada’s offering insight into clerical documents they’re keeping, however I just fail to see how the investigator has a problem with the church per se…well, except for the insult with the pagan air, but I’d think a seasoned investigator would just shrug off an insult like that.

          i did read faust.

and the detective is my character to do with as i like.

if i want him to be a transgender-Spanish-speaking-bipolar-deaf-Eskimo i can write him like that .

if i want him to be a Austrian born polity with a grudge against the church(which he is ) i can write him like that.

as for your in-satisfaction with the development. i’m writing the next section. be patent. all will be explained.

          • Refugnic

My apologies, I didn’t mean to insult you. Of course the characters are yours and you can do whatever you want with them. I was just asking a few questions on things I didn’t quite understand. I will stop doing that if it’s not considered desirable by you though.

our dear detective also has a bone to pick with the church. as hinted at by the proffered reward of church documentation.
