Unpleasant memory 1

I guess I can tell you right away that this flashback is going to take 3 pages total. This is just Ada thinking about the past, in case someone were to confuse this with what they call ‘a vision’. I hope you’ll enjoy it, I hated drawing classrooms but came to like the scene itself.

Have you seen topwebcomics? Damn, thank you! Second place, I am very happy you like the comic that much, it’s surely giving Replay a chance to grab some new readers. And the more the merrier, right?
If you feel like following Replay on Facebook, Tapastic or Twitter and occasionally chat with my humble self feel free to do so too!

I don’t feel too well so I’ll excuse myself for now and let you focus on the comic. Weather got supper cold out of a sudden ಠ_ಠ

UPDATE: Vote incentive has been updated. It’s a panel form the page I am working on right now and decided to share~

And here’s another vote from me. 😛
Besides, you deserve every single vote you’re getting. And don’t you dare letting anyone tell you that your storytelling was no-good.
    Because it is (good).

Now regarding the page itself…well, it was obvious that the flashback was coming (from the VI a little while back).
And I think the narrative did a good job on emphasizing that it’s not a vision.

Now who might that mysterious person be, I wonder…and isn’t she being a little bit too loud for a library? 😉

Now, this is just my personal impression…but somehow I don’t think this is going to end well…I dislike that smile of hers.
It gives some sort of ‘I know exactly what you’re doing and I’m going to give you hell for it.’-feel.
But maybe that’s just me and you’ll completely troll me and she turns out to be the nicest person in the world. 😀

    Either way, another lovely page.

    Good job.

Thank you very much for the vote and glad you like the page~
I guess they are not disrupting anyone since the library looks almost empty. She is not shouting either so I hope we can assume no one is going to be angry about that little chat. And it’s probably very easy to guess how things will go from here hah, not going to say anything more though, I don’t want to spoil the fun ლ(o◡oლ)

      • Refugnic Reply

Yeah, that just won’t do. 🙂

That said, what kind of highschool kid draws dicks into their notebooks? I would expect that those who do draw/doodle would rather draw the faces of their latest crush or whatever is on their mind and I doubt that ‘dicks’ are the primary concern of any highschool kid. At least not without the guy attached to it. 😛

        • buendnynumer Reply

In polish high school, if you find a notebook without even a single dick drawn inside, it means it belongs to a teacher.

BTW, every library should have a posters like the one on the 1st panel.

          • Refugnic

Of course you’re talking about the poster on the right side, aren’t you? 😉

That said…that’s…peculiar. I mean, I know that different countries have different customs and all and I know that children can be…well, fairly vulgar, though quite honestly, I fail to understand the obsession with the male genitalia (or genitalia in general)…I’m probably too old already. XD

          • NotImportant

To be completely honest with you I didn’t understand it either but it was clearly a raging trend. Didn’t change after I have finished the school either (I know because I’ve got a little sister). It just happens. I don’t think I really need to know why lol…

          • buendnynumer

I had a home school at my high school time, due to my health problems and the notebooks I was borrowing from other students were full of these. What’s interesting, skilled draftsmen hardly ever had any dicks in their notebooks, they were rather practicing some normal stuff.

        • JW Reply

That said, what kind of highschool kid draws dicks into their notebooks?

Yeah, they draw them in other people’s notebooks.
And once they get into college, on other people’s faces when they’re passed out drunk. (At least that’s what college-movies taught me. I’ve never been a party animal.)

    • SotiCoto Reply

      The storytelling is fine… probably.
Hard to tell since there is so little of it so far. And so slowly paced.

As to whether it deserves so many votes… It currently has 8,652 as of this moment.
All that for just 62 pages.

That is downright incomprehensible to me.

The only webcomic I ever vote for has been around for years, updates more often, has a four-figure page-count… and only has 611 votes now.
It clearly needs mine more than this site ever could.

      • NotImportant Reply

        Thanks for reading SotiCoto~
Topwebcomics is not a center of the webcomic universe, it’s just some ranking out there in the net. I agree that there are many great comics, way better than Replay since I am an amateur, but they simply don’t care about their ranking or don’t need it. Replay is new, so people are more likely to encourage me with votes. Top rank at topwebcomics is not some kind of golden throne we are fighting for…
        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • Refugnic Reply

You are, of course, right. The story, as it is right now, is really short. We haven’t learned much at all about the backgrounds of what happened. We just know that the world has gone to hell after a man aptly nicknamed Faust has made a deal with the devil (or a demon, that depends) and that the remainders of humanity (I was informed that the appendices are purely for cosmetic effect and serve no plot purpose) struggle in order to stay alive somehow.

I think, in terms of story pages, we’d have…I don’t know, maybe 10-15 down now, also depending on writing style and of course format.

So yes, not much has happened yet, we’re still getting to know the characters and the situation.

Yet, at the same time, NI has managed to gather a very active fanbase (including myself, what with my rather abstract Fanfics and frequent visits to the comment section).

And, what’s even more important: NI has actively asked the readership to vote. There’s a huge banner asking for votes. The Vote Incentive is getting changed every now and then. So yeah, NI is doing about everything in her power to get Replay to rise at TWC.

May I ask, does the webcomic you actively vote for (on update I assume) do these things?
Because I found quite a number of comics that are registered on TWC, but judging from their front pages, they might as well not be.
Not a single button asking for the vote or it’s hidden among the other buttons and banners. With comics like that, I do not go to the trouble of voting in order to spread the word, because the artist apparently doesn’t want me to.

All of that said, and in complete respect to your decision of only voting for that one webcomic, you can, as I am sure you know, vote for as many webcomics as you want each and every day.

Regarding the vote boom Replay is currently experiencing…well, it’s still new and exciting and attracting all kinds of people with its high-level art from the get go, which still keeps improving. However I expect the vote boom to die down a little once things settle down a little…but then again, what do I know. 🙂

      • JW Reply

I don’t see why it should be incomprehensible. It’s a popularity contest, not the academy awards.

And me, personally, tend to feel stronger about newer comics than older ones. You fall in love, go wild etc.

However, I’m always in the market for other new(-to-me) comics, and I don’t think NI would mind some namedropping, so by all means mention what comic you do vote for, and maybe you’ll win it another reader (and perhaps a voter).

        • Refugnic Reply

Heh, actually I was considering asking about that as well, see if I happened to know the comic in question, but didn’t know the proper etiquette so I prefer to stay silent.
That, and I fear that my response to his statement may have turned out a little…offensive, although I really meant no harm.

          • JW

I had a look in lower 600-ish region of topwebcomics, but I already had many of those on my list: EGS, XKCD, D&D, The Hunters of Salamanstra.
And if you look a bit lower, you have great comics like Sluggy freelance, Fey winds, Schlock Mercenary, Order of the Stick. But, as you said earlier, most of those don’t ask for my vote, nor need it.

          • NotImportant

If you guys are curious SotiCoto probably meant “El Goonish Shive” (I didn’t know that comic) but seeing that it doesn’t even have a banner on topwebcomics author doesn’t really care about the ranking. No surprise here.

          • JW

Not only does it not have a banner on topwebcomics, it also doesn’t seem to have any links to topwebcomics. So it’s kind of impressive Dan gets that many votes regardless.
I’m pretty sure that if he cared to he could top the charts in no time. But I don’t think he’d even want to and would rather give the chance to someone that needs it.

          • Refugnic

Hmm…that most certainly is impressive. I mean, technically, in order to vote for the comic, people would need to go to the TWC site, look up the comic and then vote (and probably bookmark it). The first two steps are that extra mile very few people are willing to go for their comic.

On another note, I’ll hope you’ll get better soon. And damn straight it did. When I stepped outside today it felt like I was going to freeze on the spot. It’s like transitions don’t even exist any more. You know, 2-3°C colder each day…not 15+. Honestly, the weather is going to be the end of us one day. 😀

    • NotImportant Reply

Thank you, luckily I can work from home so I will just… wait this weather out or something… My friend in Cracow told me this morning that they even have snow, ugh!

      • Refugnic Reply

Well, right now it’s sunny and heating up to be a good autumn day again, but personally I don’t think it’ll be much longer till the first snow of the term over here.
Just drink tea, keep yourself warm and it’ll be alright.

Though I (and most likely all the other readers ;)) would appreciate it, if you didn’t go into hibernation.

        Thank you. 😛

    @comic mouseover text:

Ada, honey, normal high school kids draw dicks in their notebooks, not pentacles. You got puberty all wrong!

Actually, plenty of high-school kids draw pentacles in their notebooks. I mean, it’s the sign of the devil (when it’s upside down), so it’s all cool and contrary and rebellious and stuff.

    • NotImportant Reply

Haha you are right, didn’t have many people like that in my class so I haven’t thought about it.

    • Lukkai Reply

Well, actually it’s not (the sign of the devil that is). At least not originally. That interpretation is rather new in comparison to the signs history.

      • JW Reply

I think that the original meaning of symbols is generally besides the point. The swastika was originally a sign of the sun and light ( and still is in some places, like India
), but since the nazi’s adopted it I wouldn’t try using it as decoration.

Anyway. To the Celts the pentacle was the sign of the goddess of the underworld. Not exactly the same as the devil, but similar, I think. So it’s not that new an interpretation, overall.

        • NotImportant Reply

Also guys, there IS a difference between pentacle and pentagram. While pentagram is the well known five-point star a pentacle can be pretty much anything as long as it’s a symbol meant for doing magic. From Wikipedia: The words pentacle and pentagram (a five-point unicursal star) are essentially synonymous, according to the Online Oxford English Dictionary (2007 revision), which traces the etymology through both French and Italian back to Latin, but notes that in Middle French the word “pentacle” was used to refer to any talisman. In an extended use, many magical authors treat them as distinct.
          Let’s say I’m a magical author lol.

          • JW

            You’re magical?
Do you have a transformation sequence?
Is Ada your magical animal companion?

            Ambiguity FTW 😉

          • NotImportant

I’ve got a black cat and my hair is (kind of) ginger, OF COURSE I am magical ಠ_ಠ

        • Lukkai Reply

It’s more of that at some point of Christian history, just about every pagan symbol has been associated with the devil. With a few notable exceptions like the christmas tree. That does not mean those associations share any context with the original meaning. Or that they are still widely accepted today, which they’re usually not. These days, the “sign of the devil” is mostly a pop-culture thing without any kind of relation to those people actually using the respective signs in their daily lives.

I enjoy this comic a lot it is amazing artwork and you do well with everything, I hope you keep up the good work.

  5. Lukkai Reply

So this page is where the vote incentive some time ago came from.

But yeah, pentacles in notebooks of students? Not all that uncommon, actually.

  6. SirIntellegence Reply

Just caught up. Nice comic, but, do you have an rss feed link somewhere? Or will I have to use page2rss.com? I usually use the rss feeds and feedly.com to know when comics have updated, and my list is large enough that it is not feasible to manually check the home page of all of the comics.

  7. Anonymous K Reply

If this library has several floors that would make it a multi story building. But I guess Ada is really drawn to art, but eventually there will be a time where she crosses the lines.

  8. Zero Reply

It’s nice to see this side of Ada. Kinda makes me wonder who the mystery person is though.

  9. ChuckTheProphet Reply

I did see topwebcomics, and I feel so torn! This comic is rising through the ranks, but TwoKinds keeps sinking lower and I don’t know If I should be happy or sad or not care because these rankings are basically abstractions that affect my personal life in no meaningful way.

    *le siiiiiiiigh*

    • Refugnic Reply

TwoKinds is sinking, because it’s stalling. The update schedule is the same as it is with Replay, however the story of Replay is still exciting and new and there are new readers joining and catching up every day, finding an active community here (contrary to TwoKinds, which doesn’t seem to have a comment section).

Furthermore TK has been around for 11 years, which is an achievement in and by itself, but it just may have aged beyond it’s Zenith.

Regarding Happy/Sad/Don’t care…well, the only people these rankings are actually important for are the ones making the comic AND those actively supporting them.
So unless you’re one of these, ‘not care’ is likely the correct reaction. ;P

    • NotImportant Reply

TwoKinds is sinking probably only because Tom was seek, update was late, no new vote incentive and so on. But I am pretty sure he would be fine even without topwebcomics, he has so many readers haha. That’s a big chance for new comics, like Replay, to come to light though! Think about it as seniors giving a bit of space on the scene for those noobs who have only started gathering their readers~

      • Refugnic Reply

That’s another way to look at it, most certainly.

Though yeah, TK can be considered as ‘established’, that’s right. That Replay, despite it’s young age, managed to rise to that rank in such a short time is not only commendable but also says a lot about the community you’re gathering here and of course about the general quality of the comic itself (which is top-tier, as I’m sure many of the others here will agree) 😉

“I see a bad moon rising, I see trouble on the way”. Good job with the “Hi, you don’t know me but I am here to mess up your day and your life” That smile speaks volumes.

    • Refugnic Reply

Yup, it most certainly gives off that vibe, doesn’t it?

Though I do wonder what kinda bone this one has to pick with poor Ada.
Let’s not forget that she’s reminiscing about ‘All these years and I’m still like this’. This implies that she has a character fault she is aware of but can’t do anything about, like for example not disclosing what’s really on her mind.

But we’ll see how this will go in due time. 🙂

      • Rick Brewster Reply

Not being the author I, of course, don’t really know where this flashback is going. I just remember when I was in high school when an upperclass (wo)man (which she appears to be or at least upper social scale) speaks to a lower class person with a suspicious smile, it’s never for the targets benefit. I still remember those things and it’s been 53 years since I was in high school.
