Aah I don’t know yet! They’ll let me know in a week or so… We had some problems submitting the documents and had to run around the city to get additional papers but we managed somehow. Gotta wait now!

You think in a world where everything is conected that something like this would go quicker.
            Still crossing my fingers.

As a Jewish person, I’m okay with your using the Hebrew letters, six-part seals, etc., but I do wish you would use a bit more research. There are “actual” “spells” historically that use this format (most well known is the Seal of Solomon), and I would like to see a bit more of the Jewish magic traditions and history being used if you’re going to use the symbols.
I do love the comic, so please don’t take this as harsh criticism, and if you’ve been avoiding using Jewish rituals for fear of them looking too stereotypical, I completely respect that. It just feels like cultural appropriation to see Jewish symbology being used for magic without any other Jewish symbology in the comic.
Obviously, too, magic in this comic is not restricted to the Jewish symbols, as evidenced by the magic swords.
In the end, it’s up to you to decide how magic works in your world. However, if you decided to use the Jewish symbols just to look cool, it wouldn’t really make me upset, but I would be disappointed.
Still, I love the comic and the storyline you’re creating – do keep it up, please.

Thank you for reading! If I do anything inappropriate or make you feel bad please let me know. I’m doing what I can to make this comic both entertaining and informative but well, am only a person after all…

There will be a lot explained about the magic in the next chapter. How Ada came to know those spells, where do they come from… I hope the explanation and origin of magic in this comic will be satisfactory for you and everyone else 🙂 As for my personal reason – I noticed once that many people build their faith and opinions about tge world without trying to see the other options. There any many known ancient texts that are beyond fascinating and people don’t even know they exist. I wanted to change that. Sounds weird, when what I do is wrap it up in a silly comic like this… but I only meant to show something interesting that many have no idea about. Maybe I’ll manage to inspire someone to do a little research. It’s a great joy for me that you actually recognize the spells, I wasn’t sure if anyone would. And yes, they have been altered. That will be explained too.

Thank you again! I hope I won’t disappoint.

Well.. I did just finish “The Book of English Magic” (ISBN:9781848540415), partly due to this comic.
Not necessarily a book I’d recommend, though. I imagine much better histories of (English) magic could be written. It feels a bit thrown-together/fragmentary, sometimes repeats itself a few pages later, and also a bit credulous.
But nevertheless, it’s interesting to see how successive waves of influence (Kabbala, Rosicrucianism,. Alchemy) changed and developed magical theory/practice. In that tradition, it seems only natural to adapt it further, rather than stick to “traditional” spells.

I also found it worth noting that you are the creator of this world, so any magic you use is up to you to create or research. Plus, these symbols are used in real magic, as far as I can tell. My mom has books on Tarot Cards and Pagan Magic, and I’ve done a bit of research using those. Granted, The Book of Shadows will only get one so far, as it is a biggining level book, and is only meant for initiates of a coven. There are other times and such, but we sadly don’t have any here at home. I now realize I live with a man who is of a church for bacon, and a witch. Every time I talk about my family, I realize just how strange I am.

The letters are identical, and in fact, Aramaic is the language that the Torah was originally written in. Aramaic is the arcane form of Hebrew, for all intents and purposes, and it is the original Jewish language. So, no. It basically already is anyway, given the importance of Aramaic as the source language in the tradition.

That’s because there is no way for Ada to know that, for her those are just scribbles she rewrites from her notes. She doesn’t know the language.

Maybe she doesn’t know what she’s writing, but just drawing the symbols as best she can.

Or maybe they’re living in a mirror universe.. No, wait, then the characters should be backwards..

Maybe it’s an old spell, and is working like an old generator. Give it two clicks to turn on.
